The Importance of Chit-Chat

Chit-chat is essential at any networking event, job interview, or attending class. However, for some, chit-chat and banter come more naturally. When working with clients who struggle with connecting with others for various reasons, a few strategies work well.

The first strategy is to have a well-rehearsed elevator pitch reflecting authenticity, values, and purpose. Another is to read the news both abroad and domestically, specifically business and finance news that might be of interest. The third area is about enjoyment in one's personal life, such as hiking, camping, traveling, or creating. One should always research the people and companies they might interact with to find commonalities and talking points.

The last piece is that one should record oneself when prepping for interviews or presentations to see how their audience perceives them by using tone, words, volume, framing, facial expression, and other body language. By recording and learning from previous recordings and experience, one will get better and more comfortable interviewing and presenting. Also, proficiency will increase too.
